Did you know that World Development Information Day was last Saturday?

If you’d like to discover what is the role of IT in a business, keep on reading.

"Information and communications technologies have the potential to provide new solutions to development challenges, particularly in the context of globalization, and can foster economic growth, competitiveness, access to information and knowledge, poverty eradication and social inclusion." - UN General Assembly.

This ‘day’ was established in 1972 to show the importance of IT to the global economy even then, close to 50 years ago.

Many of our clients weren’t even alive 50 years ago when this pledge was first expressed and yet today in 2020, this day should resonate with all companies as we grapple with a global pandemic which is impacting us all.

Going back 50 Years...

The power of IT going back 50 years has transformed the way we now live our lives, the way we do business and the way we communicate. The Millennial Generation will soon turn 40 years old and they will be the biggest buying generation in history and the first generation brought up in the digital age. They could not imagine a life without tech.

It’s now seen as a basic human right to have access to technology at home and at work and we are clearly at a disadvantage if we do not. It’s amazing that some business owners still resist this transformational change which is still happening today.

Globally, international trade has become more robust, as technological advances have improved operations, and lowered the cost of doing business. We are so connected to anyone anywhere that the barriers of borders in some sectors are no longer relevant.

IT has proved critical to the ability to continue to do business in 2020 alongside the need for sustainable growth as IT allows businesses to be more ‘green’ comes with less use of paper and systems being taken online.

Did you know that in 2018 83.9% of businesses in the UK had an online presence or a website?

It is seen as vital and yet many lag behind when it comes to useful tools and online resources. Take social media as an example - only 57% of small businesses embrace those platforms, even in 2020 and even in a pandemic. That surely has to change.
